Our Story

Atelje Duka, or Studio Duka, was set up by Dubravka Šorel over twenty years ago and has blossomed into the well loved landmark of Piran that it is today. The pottery workshop and exhibition gallery is situated near Tartini square, and having lived her entire life in Piran much of Duka’s work draws its inspiration from the unique location. Duka has a long love of clay and makes use of hand shaped moulds, unique glazes, and specific firing techniques to achieve a wide range of totally unique and instantly recognisable ceramics and porcelain objects. Duka has also exhibited widely both at home in Slovenia, and abroad in individual and group shows.

The Next Generation

The studio has always been something of a family affair, with a helping hand lent from its early days by Duka’s daughter Jerneja Šorel . While she is gradually learning the fulltime running of the studio from her mum, Jerneja is also classically trained as a Master Mosaicist at the Friuli School of Mosaics in Spilimbergo, Italy, and so brings an extra craft dimension to the studio.

The Gallery

The centre of Atelje Duka is the gallery space in the heart of Piran. This is where the kilns are, the workshop, and where all the ceramics are conceived and made. Apart from hosting the wares of the Atelje, the gallery also hosts periodic exhibitions from local and international artists. Please feel free to come and vist us as all our wares and more are available in the real world shop here.

Piran, Slovenia’s Adriatic Jewel

Nestled at the top of the Istrian peninsula Piran, or Pirano in Italian, is a jewel of late Venetian architecture that thrives with the bustle of tourists and locals, fishermen, craftspeople, bars and restaurants.

Atelje Duka sits at the heart of this beautiful peninsular along one of its many romantic backstreets. Just metres from the sea the location couldn’t be more stunning.
